Recording an oral history is a simple process. Everyone has a story to tell and we can help you tell it.
Recording an oral history is a simple process. Everyone has a story to tell and we can help you tell it.

One of the questions I get asked most often is: ‘Which type of oral history film should I choose?’

It's a fair question.

Family Tree Films offers three different options, and while I can explain the technical differences all day long, what really matters is finding the right fit for your family's needs and goals.

Let me break down the three approaches and help you think about which one might be right for you.

The Simple Oral History:

A Life Remembered

This is our straightforward interview option. We sit down with your loved one, ask a thoughtful set of preselected questions, and let them talk. No fancy editing, no music overlay, no bells and whistles. Just the conversation, captured clearly and completely.

Who is this right for? Families who want to prioritize getting the stories recorded without overthinking it. Maybe you're working with a limited budget, or maybe you simply value authenticity over production. Perhaps your parent is a natural storyteller and doesn't need anything else—their words are enough. This approach also works well if you're racing against time and need to capture memories quickly without waiting for a more complex production process.

The beauty of the simple oral history is its honesty. There's nothing between the viewer and the person speaking. It feels like you’re sitting in the room with them.

The Middle Tier:

Life’s Memories: A Oral History

This option takes the interview and elevates it with editing, music, and photographs. We're weaving together the spoken memories with images from different periods of your loved one's life, adding some music cues that creates emotional resonance, and editing the footage to create a more polished viewing experience.

Who is this right for? Families who have a collection of photographs they'd love to see integrated into the storytelling. Maybe your mom talks about her childhood, and you've got pictures from that era that would make those stories more vivid. Or perhaps you want something that feels more like a keepsake film—something you'd like to share at a family gathering or milestone event. This level adds depth and texture without going full documentary-style.

It's the sweet spot for many families: more than just raw footage, but not requiring the investment of a fully narrated production.

The Premium Film:

The Heirloom Film

This is the most sophisticated option. In addition to everything in the middle tier, we add professional narration that guides the story, creates context, and gives the film a polished, documentary feel. This is a cinematic tribute that feels more crafted and intentional.

Who is this right for? Families who see this as creating a legacy piece—something that will be treasured for generations and represents the full scope of someone's life and impact. Maybe your father has an extraordinary story that deserves that level of treatment. Or perhaps you want something that could be shown at a significant event like a major anniversary or memorial service. This option is for families who want the film itself to be an heirloom.

So Which One Is Right for You?

Ask yourself: What's most important to you?

  • Capturing the stories quickly and affordably?

  • Creating something with emotional and visual richness?

  • Or producing a cinematic legacy piece?

There's no wrong answer. The best oral history film is the one that gets made—the one that preserves the voice, the stories, and the presence of someone who matters. Start with what feels right for your family, and we'll create something meaningful together.

If you're ready to create a legacy that speaks to generations to come, contact us at Family Tree Films. We'll help you to preserve your story for the descendants who are waiting to hear it.
